Rev. Paul Townsend, Pastor

Rev. Paul Townsend

Hi, I am Pastor Paul David Townsend. (Usually people just call me Pastor Paul.) Since February of 2009, I have been leading Zion Lutheran Church in what I trust is the right direction for us at this time. Let me tell you about Zion and about myself.

Our Church and Our Ministry

Zion Lutheran Church began sometime in the early 1700s by a group of German farmers that lived along the Schuylkill River. The church officially organized in 1743 with the help of The Reverend Doctor Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, whom is considered to be the father of American Lutheranism. Our history is long and interesting, but we believe that our future is even more exciting.

  • We are a community of Christians who believe that we are called to share God’s renewing love for the world.
  • We believe in second chances and that anyone can start over again, with a new opportunity to live life fully.
  • We believe that God calls us to love and serve our neighbors.
  • We are eager to serve our community in new and creative ways as we share our faith in God and proclaim our hope for the future.

Among the neighbors that we are eager to serve, we are very aware of the young people of our community. We believe that it is our privilege and duty to help teach and shape the lives of tomorrow’s leaders through our extended outreach in the Zion Lutheran Preschool. We are very conscious of the trust that is afforded us by the parents of the preschool students and always seek your help in learning how we can best serve your children and families.

Pastor Paul

I have served as an ordained pastor since 1982, first in North Carolina, and since 1992, here in the Philadelphia area. Most of my time has been served in congregations that are going through some form of transition. Maybe the reason why I have gravitated toward that kind of work is that I was born to missionary parents in Argentina, have moved a lot and have observed the joy that comes to those who seek a promise for tomorrow. Having said that, I am a big history buff, deeply impacted by the lessons of the past. My greatest challenge lies in honoring the past, while envisioning a future for those I lead. I believe that our best days are yet to come.

One of my greatest joys in life is spending time with young people, such as our "Children's Time with Pastor Paul" talks in each classroom. Children are so bright and inquisitive, always wanting to know so much more. They are exploring, reaching and testing the boundaries of the world in which they live. I wish to help them discover the wealth of past generations and the joy of living in our present age. Stories are one of my primary sources since they offer a rich source of wisdom, comfort and challenge. I often will compose new stories based on older tales, offering a prism through which one might explore one’s own life. Everyone loves a good story, especially if it gives them hope for tomorrow.

I love what I do. I am challenged by the opportunity to share The Good News in a "bad news kind of world".  If you want to talk some more about these things, I invite you to come visit with me!
